Trends: summer 2022 in eyewear
The sun is (finally) shining brightly, leaving us with an irresistible desire to slip on the latest shades. From classic to quirky, shades are an all-important fashion accessory for finishing an outfit. Yet to find your perfect fit? Discover the 10 eyewear trends to look out for in 2022 and the designs to really help you shine this summer!
LOGOMANIA
Discreet they are not; these glasses are designed both to see and be seen. Show-off shades with oversized logos are back! From Miu Miu to Balenciaga’s Dynasty, via Lanvin’s Mother and Child and Versace’s Medusa Biggie, brands have reworked their iconic metal plates and medallions in creating these updated XXL versions. Think shiny gold on thick temples and oversize shapes – basically, all things daring and dazzling.
BIG IS BEAUTIFUL
Oversize may be in again, but things have moved on… this summer, opt for a vintage look with longevity – think glasses inspired by the Fifties and Sixties, embracing different angles, thicknesses and colors. The latest XXL frames are big on originality with thick frames in acetate, bio-based materials (Moken) and recycled polycarbonate (Szade), wide temples and revisited square shapes (Gigi Studio).
CLEAR WINNERS
For the past few seasons, clear frames have been around in an array of colors, but this summer, crystal clear acetate promises to show off your tan (and your shimmery summer make-up) to best advantage. As Emma Roberts, Rita Ora and Solange Knowles already know, the choice is clear!
MINIMALIST CHIC
Dainty metal glasses can be found in every shape, with square frames and round frames among them. Fans of understated style are sure to love these timeless styles, including Ray-Ban‘s iconic aviators. It-Girl Hailey Bieber also created some as part of her collaboration with Vogue Eyewear, a collection generating buzz in eyewear news this spring/summer.
ARCHITECTURAL INFLUENCES
The most original shades this season have come off the hottest runways, embracing 3D elements, facets, twists and geometric shapes. Passionate about design, Miuccia Prada has reworked the Prada triangle, applying this distinctive detail to some striking oversize shades. At Balenciaga, non-conformist Demna Gvasalia has created twisted temples for the Twist frames, while the eclectic creative director of Gucci, Alessandro Michele has designed multiple-aesthetic inspired collections in his own image.
SPORTY MASK STYLES
The influence of Maria-Grazia Chiuri’s sporty Dior Cruise 2022 show is clear to see in this Dior Oblique mask design for stylish urbanites. These styles by Céline and Fendi’s Disco design with their futuristic feel are also aimed more at fans of fashion than fans of sport.
SORBET SHADES
The colors adorning (nearly) all this season’s eyewear are sweet and tangy enough to make your mouth water! Candy pink, mint green, raspberry red, lemon yellow, lavender and mango – who can resist them? Inspired by ready-to-wear, these summery shades complement the shape and look of any frames, not to mention faces of all shapes and sizes as well.
LA VIE EN ROSE
Vacations, beach trips and festivals… the time to look at life through rose-colored glasses is now! Flirty pink frames lend themselves to any occasion, whether it’s in the middle of the desert at Coachella (very peace and love!), or an elegant celebration on the Italian Riviera.
BACK TO BLACK
Indispensable, iconic, legendary; dark glasses are making their big comeback. Not only does black go with everything, it flatters all frame shapes too. But as well as being the height of elegance and subtlety, they also stand out from the crowd – take the trompe-l’œil design by Alaïa, the reinvented cat-eye by Saint Laurent, or the reinvented mask style by Lanvin, for example. Some, like Facebook’s Ray-Ban Stories, even incorporate the latest technology.
REVISITED CAT-EYE
This sexy and feminine Sixties style is all the proof we need that the vintage look is ever popular. Designers have reworked their cat-eye styles with sophisticated pink and yellow lenses at Dior, made them bold and oversize at Stella McCartney, and gone for quirky chic at Karl Lagerfeld.
